Memorable Picture Books by Local Authors

Check out these wonderful read-aloud books!

There are many talented authors living in our area. Take time to read these picture books with your children or children you know.

Debbie’s Daily Dose of Food for Thought

Jim Trelease has been spreading the word about the importance of reading to children since 1979 when his first edition of The Read-Aloud Handbook was published. It is now being used by parents and educators around the world. He stresses, "The more you read, the better you get, the better you get, the more you like it; and the more you like it, the more you do it." So, read, interact with and have fun with the children in your life!

Drum City by Thea Guidone

Children will enjoy the beat, rhyming text and colorful illustrations of this book. Use pots, pans and spoons or make your own drums and have a parade. This will be fun for everyone!

Scribble by Deborah Friedman

Be prepared for a scribbling session after reading this colorful, adventurous book. Why not create characters out of your scribbles, add features and make up stories about them?

Seeds! Seeds! Seeds! by Nancy Elizabeth Wallace

Spring is here and it is the perfect time to plant seeds. Learn about seeds as you enjoy the story, collage illustrations and later do some planting with your child!

Socksquatch by Frank W. Dormer

Kids will enjoy this first monster book with its short text, strong, spare illustrations and the search for a second sock. Can’t we all relate to a lost sock?

All of these books can also be read at a birthday party and lead to fun activities with a goody to bring home: a drum; a scribble character; seeds planted in a paper cup or small flower pot; and, a new pair of socks found after a find-the-matching sock hunt!
