The Garden Club of New Haven, a member of the Garden Club of America and the Federated Garden Clubs of Connecticut, Inc. invites the public to its Flower Show,  “’Neath the Elms,’” to be held on October 26, 2011, from 12 p.m. to 6 p.m. and on October 27, from 10 a.m. to 1:30 p.m..  The Flower Show will include entries in Flower Arranging, Horticulture and Photography.  The Show will be held at the New Haven Lawn Club, 193 Whitney Avenue, New Haven, in the Main Dining Room.  The New Haven Lawn Club is wheel-chair accessible and free parking is conveniently located in front of the building directly off Whitney Avenue.  We hope you will join us in what we expect to be an outstanding collection of talented entries.

The Garden Club of New Haven is a non-profit organization dedicated to “creating interest in and promoting knowledge of gardening, preservation of natural resources, and civic horticultural work in the Greater New Haven area.”  Some of the activities of the Club have included the care, over the last sixty years, of Phelps Triangle, as well as the preservation of its history.  Material documenting this care was recently accepted by the Smithsonian Museum in recognition of the value of historic preservation, design and ongoing care of our horticultural history in New Haven.

In this Flower Show, the Garden Club of New Haven as part of its annual zone meeting, will be showcasing nearly one hundred entries submitted in classes of Flower Arranging, Horticulture and Photography.  All entries are juried and will be judged.  They will represent the best work of the most talented members of member garden clubs throughout the Connecticut and Rhode Island Garden Club Zone II.  Member entrants will be creating floral arrangements which capture themes of poetry, drama, dance and art.  They will be working with horticulture and submitting entries in categories such as topiary, fall window boxes and seasonal wreaths as well as plants and flowers.  And they will be displaying monochrome and color photographs conveying their interpretations of the theme, “City meets Country.”

“The purpose of a flower show is threefold: to set standards of artistic and horticultural excellence; to broaden knowledge of horticulture, flower arrangement, conservation, and other related areas; and to share the beauty of a show with others.”  The members of the Garden Club of New Haven hope this Show will delight, inspire and amaze you. This is a rare opportunity to see a collection of the best of the best together in one show and the New Haven Lawn Club is a beautiful setting for such a display.  Please join us.
