UPDATES: Winter Storm Warning in Effect for Branford

The Branford Public School District will operate on a 90-minute delay today, as crews continue their clean up following the latest winter storm.

The Branford Public School district will dismiss early today in advance of the coming storm.

UPDATE at 4:05 p.m. 

A winter storm warning has just been issued for Branford, as well as much of the rest of the region — with snowfall totals with tomorrow's storm expected to range from 6 to 10 inches here along the shoreline.

The National Weather Service's warning will go into effect at noon on Tuesday and run through to early Wednesday morning. 

"Snowfall will begin late Tuesday morning and will continue through Tuesday night, tapering off early Wednesday morning," the weather service meteorologists state in their warning report. "The heaviest snowfall will occur Tuesday afternoon and evening."

The periods of heavy snow will significantly reduce visibility, making travel on the slick roads even more difficult. 

The storm's arrival Tuesday will also usher bitterly cold air in the area, along with wind gusts of up to 35 miles per hour. Wind chills are expected to reach as low as -10 degrees by late Tuesday night.

The National Weather Service says a winter storm watch is in effect from Tuesday afternoon until late Tuesday night. 

Snow accumulations of four to eight inches, and the chance of some locally higher accumulations, are possible across Connecticut. North winds could be 15 to 25 mph, with gusts up to 30 mph. 

And it will be cold. Temperatures will be in the teens to lower 20s during the day and could drop to single digits at night—the wind will make it feel like about 10 below zero. 

Visibilities could drop to one quarter to one half mile at times, the NWS says. 

When Will the Snow Start?

The snowfall is expected to begin late Tuesday morning and continue into Tuesday night, with the heaviest snowfall expected Tuesday afternoon and evening. 

"Falling, blowing, and drifting snow will cause hazardous travel and walking conditions across the area, possibly [affecting] the late afternoon and evening commute," the National Weather Service reports. "Extreme cold and low wind chills could cause frost bite. Dress appropriately."
