Branford Community House Recognized for Energy Efficiency

Branford Community House was recently recognized by the Connecticut Department of Energy and Environmental Protection (DEEP) for its commitment to reducing its energy consumption and air pollution during summer 2012. The gymnasium and community meeting center was one of eleven organizations statewide to receive a “Summer Saver” award. Branford Community House received a Summer Saver Silver Award, given to organizations or businesses that reduce electricity consumption and demand by ten to 20 percent during the summer months. Working with experts from Connecticut Light & Power (CL&P) to make use of incentives supported by the Energy Efficiency Fund, the organization was able to implement several energy efficiency upgrades and saw an energy consumption reduction of 14 percent. “The businesses and organizations we honor today made a commitment to reduce their energy use and by doing so have become models for others to follow,” said DEEP Commissioner Daniel C. Esty at a ceremony at the State Capitol on April 23. “The combined efforts of the eleven Summer Savers Award winners resulted in energy savings in kilowatt hours, peak electricity demand and in CO2 emissions. Lower power demand also reduces emissions from power plants, helping to prevent pollution that contributes to smog.” The energy efficient measures taken by the Branford Community House include the successful completion of a lighting retrofit project. In addition to more energy efficient lighting, the organization also encourages recycling and energy efficient behavior in the adults and children who utilize the facility on a daily basis.
