The Lancraft Fife & Drum Corps was formed in New Haven, Connecticut back in 1888 and has been in continuous operation ever since. A 501(c)(3) (not-for-profit) corporation, its Constitution states; “the purpose of our Corps shall be to preserve and perpetuate the historic music form of fifing and drumming. This mission is accomplished by education programs and presentations in schools, as well as enhancing public awareness and appreciation through performances at patriotic and civic events.”
In the past, Lancraft members have voted to honor certain individuals for their outstanding achievement and their commitment to Lancraft's mission.
Article V, Section 4 of the Lancraft Fife & Drum Corps By-Laws states; “an Honorary Member is a person who is elected by a majority vote of members after presentation of the merits of that person in writing. Honorary Members shall enjoy all the privileges of the Corps except the right to vote. The Honorary Member shall pay no dues.”
Alex Drago, an autistic man of 18, having shown his commitment to our Corps mission by his outstanding attendance at Lancraft parade and muster events, was made an Honorary Member of Lancraft at its December 6, 2012 meeting.
To commemorate Alex's membership, the corps organized “Alex Drago Night” which was held on January 10, 2013. Dozens of Alex's family and friends gathered at Lancraft's Moriarty Hall to witness him take the oath of membership. Alex was also presented with a Lancraft Citation for his accomplishments, a plaque commemorating his membership, a tri-corn hat with Corps emblems and a dozen roses.
