What Happened to the Great Oak at Double Beach?

The famous Great Oak at Double Beach survived the 1938 Hurricane, but came down sometime before 1991. Do you know what happened to it?

Since starting this column, I've had some great correspondence via e-mail with local residents who have read the column and shared their memories with me. Some have even sent photos! Before getting into our next question, I wanted to thank the readers who have shared their stories, questions, and images with me – and have allowed me to share them on Branford Patch!

This week's question is about the Great Oak at Double Beach, which I mentioned in the history. Marty Aligata, a volunteer with Connecticut Notable Trees, asked when the Great Oak came down. As I mentioned in that article, we know it fell sometime after the Hurricane of '38, but before 1991, when Jane Bouley of the Branford Historical Society mentioned  it in an article for the Branford Review.

So, readers, that's our question of the week: what do you know about this once-famous tree? When do you think it came down? Have any photos of the tree?
