Branford can expect several inches of snow overnight into Saturday according to the National Weather Service. The organization says there is a chance that a low pressure system passing to the southeast will bring accumulating snow late Friday into Saturday. The service has issued a hazardous weather alert for New Haven, Middlesex, and New London counties.

"There is a 30 percent chance that this low could bring a significant snowfall of six inches to central and eastern portions of southern Connecticut and Long Island, especially away from the sound and ocean," the NWS says. "There is still some forecast uncertainty ... a weaker or more offshore low track would hold snowfall amounts down ... a stronger or closer low track could bring more snow than forecast."

Organizers of the Madison Penguin Plunge, originally scheduled for Saturday, Feb. 11, have decided to postpone the event due to the forecast.

"The Special Olympics Connecticut Penguin Plunge in Madison at Hammonasset State Park set for tomorrow has been rescheduled to next Saturday, Feb.18 due to the snowfall that is expected overnight and through the morning on Saturday, Feb. 11," organizers said. "The decision to postpone the event was made to protect the safety and welfare of those who would be participating and traveling to the event in potentially dangerous conditions."
